Picture of the Day: Roxanne Modafferi and Rosi Sexton's After Fight Dessert

Rosi Sexton and Roxanne Modafferi met in the cage at Cage Warriors 40 in London, England this past Saturday Afterwards, they met for cookies and ice cream. This is not an unusal site for female fighters. Leaving it all in the cage to celebrate an amazing fight with delicious snacks is how they roll!

I wonder if Michael Bisping and Jorge Rivera can say the same?

Thank you Roxanne Modafferi for letting me steal this picture! :0)

Here is the footage of their amazing fight. Rosi Sexton won via unanimous decision.

Thanks to WARWMMA (NonStop WMMA) for posting the fight to You tube!

UFC 127: I Can't Believe I Watched the Whole Thing

By Lacey Neher

To be honest I wasn't too excited about UFC 127 in the first place. In the weeks leading up to the event in Austrailia,  I even considered not watching it at all, but as MMA media and admin of Real Women and Men watch MMA I feel an obligation (an obligation I happily embrace) to making sure everyone is informed of the results. I fed into the hype in the days before the fights, and got a little tinge of excitement in the hours before the fights. I went to the table to eat from my favorite dish and ended up getting a stomach ache, so to speak. I am going to touch on some of the nights fights and happenings that stand out in my mind.

I was excited to see the Riki Fukada/Nick Ring fight. I remember watching Ring on The Ultimate Fighter and being impressed by him, and when he was out of the competiton due to an injury, I wondered if he was going to get a shot in the UFC or not. Well, he got his shot and he gave a lackluster performance. The big shocker was the judges decision. After Fukada clearly dominated the fight the judges gave the unanimous decision to Ring. Even Ring couldn't believe it. That's what you get for not finishing.

These days seems like most fights in the UFC are decisions. Is the rampant cuts by the UFC being layed down after a fighter loses three fights in a row to blame for this? Are some fighters afraid to go for the big finish to prevent getting KO'd or submitted by their opponent. The UFC is the mecca of all organizations to fight in and why would anyone want to risk getting cut? Right?  Are fighters, fighting not to lose rather fighting to win? Are the fighters so good in the UFC these days that they are ceasing to evolve? I understand that not all fights will come to a finish, but decisions are running rampant these days! Other promotions don't seem having the same results..you know who they are......
I usually don't watch the prelims on Facebook, the feed is never good enough, but I tried and I saw bits and pieces of the fights. Both FB fights ended with guillotines. I was glad they re-aired Zhangs guillotine win over Reinhardt on the PPV, that was probably the most exciting moment of the evening. Mark Hunt's knock out of Chris Tuchscherer, came in a close second. The other two finishes of the night came when Alexander Gustoffson submitted James Te Huna and Kyle Noke submitted Chris Camozzi, both by rear naked choke. All but, Noke's finish were buried in the prelims.

Before, you cry, "No! Bisping finished Jorge Rivera!" let me explain why in my eyes it doesn't count. Yes, it was a finish technically, but It's hard for me to consider Michael Bisping's TKO of Jorge Rivera notable. The finish was tarnished by Bispings illegal knee to his downed opponent. Whether Michael Bisping kneed Jorge Rivera in an overzealous move or he did it blatantly, Rivera never recovered from the knee to his noggin and therefore, Bisping's win will be remembered (by me anyway) as anything but, a great finish.

Chris Lytle lost to the guy that replaced Carlos Condit, Brian Ebersole rocked Lytle and the boxing champ never really recovered fully. The most memorable part of the fight was Ebersole's chest hair. It was shaved into an arrow pointing up. Still perplexed by that. But, I remember it and that was the point ultimately.

The Australian crowd witnessed their favorite MMA son, George Sotiropoulos suffer his first loss in the UFC at the hands of Dennis Siver. I was impressed by  Siver, he showed what a scrappy and strong fighter he is. Sotiropoulos isn't an easy opponent but, homecage advantage didn't help him in this case.

When the Penn Fitch match up began, I thought I was going to see one of two things; either Penn was going to KO Fitch or Fitch was going to squeak out a decision by putting his weight on Penn for most of the fight. I was surprised to see Penn go for a takedown like he did. Most of the fight was back and forth as far as control, but that third round was clearly dominated by Fitch.

When the majority draw decision came down the first thought I had was one word, anti-climatic. All this hype building up to this fight and it comes to a majority draw. Just like UFC 125, all hype none of the excitement. Did you hear Mike Goldberg accidentally say UFC 125 when referring to the nights event? Fruedian slip maybe?  If you think about it there really wasn't much difference. (except the Edgar/Maynard fight was a title fight) I'm not trying to ruffle any die-hard all UFC all the time feathers but, is the UFC PR machine so good at spinning the prefight hype that we get over-excited? Is the UFC shooting themselves in the preverbial foot? These are questions that may or may never get answered, and my stomach still hurts.

Here are the official results for UFC 127

MAIN PPV CARD:
*Neither B.J. Penn nor Jon Fitch win as the fight is a majority draw. (29-28 Fitch, 28-28, 28-28 majority draw)

*This article is an opinion piece and it isn't necessarily the opinion of all real women and men who love MMA.

Exclusive Interview with BJ Penn's Boxing Coach, Troy "Rudeboy" Mandaloniz

By Avid MMA fan and Real Women and Men's MMA contributor, Frank Feret

Troy “Rudeboy” Mandaloniz can be a human punching bag at times... even when working with top welterweight BJ Penn in Sydney, Australia. I was fortunate to be able to ask BJ Penn's boxing coach some questions leading up to BJ's fight this Saturday at UFC 127 against Jon Fitch.

FF: Starting with the biggest pre-fight story, your camp brought in Matt Hughes to help with training for this fight. Besides the obvious wrestling, what did Matt Hughes bring help with BJ's preparation for Jon Fitch?

Mandaloniz: A lot of people have been saying that Hughes is so much different than Fitch and this and that, but Hughes actually had a few ideas of things to look out for and helped BJ tremendously from an offensive standpoint. When the coaches would describe certain positions that Fitch goes to he would say, "Oh yeah, I know that position" than he would give us a look that was exactly what we needed.

FF: What type of pace are you expecting BJ to utilize against Fitch? Is the plan for him to come out blazing or stay patient and counter Fitch?

Mandaloniz: BJ will definitely come out blazing. We have definitely added huge things to his arsenal that is not only for this fight but for every battle and I'm quite certain people will be surprised to see what we've come up with.

FF: BJ is notoriously tough to take down. What else does Fitch bring to this fight that BJ needs to avoid?

Mandaloniz: Fitch is relentless in his grinding style. BJ needs to avoid being "wet-blanketed" and pitter-pattered for 15 minutes.

FF: BJ's boxing has always been very good but it seems to have improved greatly under you. What changes have you made since taking over as boxing coach and for this fight specifically?

Mandaloniz: I refuse to take credit for his "improvement." The only change that I bring to the table is the consistency of work. BJ doesn't take time off. Nowadays, his training is his lifestyle. Fortunately the last few fights didn't cause any injuries and we got right back in the gym immediately. In the past, a break was taken. Coaches flew back home and went back to their jobs. now I'm designated to keep BJ active, crisp, and fast between fights. that way, when the team is reunited for the 6-7 week camp, nothing is lost. Steady progress. Justin McCully plays a huge role in all of this. I couldn't ever try to toot my horn on this subject.

FF: Knowing that the winner gets a welterweight title shot, would BJ want to stay at 170 or go back to 155 to avenge his fights with Frankie Edgar?

Mandaloniz: Right now the focus is Jon Fitch. Right now, we will STAY FOCUSED.

FF: With all of the time zones that BJ and yourself have been to, what effect do they have on his cardio and training?

Mandaloniz: As far as this fight, we are only three  hours behind Hawaii. Although it's still yesterday there. BJ looks great. the black smoke from travel has blown out. He's ready!

FF: Jon Fitch tends to have boring fights. Is that something that you want to try to eliminate for the fans or just stick to the game plan?

Mandaloniz: The only way this fight would be boring is if we failed at our game plan and strategy. I'm not expecting a boring fight whatsoever.

FF: BJ's last fight was a huge success with a quick knockout of Hughes, Was that the game plan, to take him out early?

Mandaloniz: The game plan was to go out there balls to the wall, walk right through his punches and fight like he was a kid again for 15 minutes.

FF: Let's turn to you for a second. With all of the training you have been doing with BJ and Kendall, and the birth of your daughter, do you have plans to return to the octagon or do you plan on just coaching?

Mandaloniz:  Before i was ever known in the UFC, my mind was set on coaching. When i started all this stuff back in '97, it was with the Penn family. Ever since BJ exploded onto the scene, I've always envisioned being able to train fighters in my hometown of Hilo for the rest of my living years. I think I'm off to a great start!

FF: Fan question! While training with sparring mitts, has a fighter ever missed and clocked you real good?

Mandaloniz: Clocked me? Many times... don't you know who I am? im the juggernaut B***h :)

FF: Thanks, Troy. Best of luck.

Mandaloniz: Thanks man, have a good one.

Whether it be at Lightweight or Welterweight, one thing is for sure, The Prodigy always keeps his eye on the prize and will be focused, prepared and determined to take out Jon Fitch and earn another chance to become Welterweight Champion. BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch, along with Jorge Rivera vs. Michael Bisping this Saturday night in Sydney at UFC 127.

Miesha Tate out of Title Fight, Liz Carmouche Set to Fight Marloes Coenen

By Lacey Neher

Strikeforce reported today that Miesha Tate had to withdraw from her welterweight championship fight with Marloes Coenen (18-4) today because she suffered a knee injury during training. Tate was set to meet Coenen in Columbus, Ohio on the Henderson-Feijao card on March 5th after she earned the title shot by winning the one night 4 woman tournament back in August. The undefeated, Liz "Girl-Rilla" Carmouche (5-0) will step in and fight Coenen with less than two weeks till fight night. Carmouche was last seen fighting at Strikeforce Challengers 12 where she defeated Jan Finney by TKO in the third round, and this will be Carmouche's third fight with the Strikeforce organization. The former Marine who served in Iraq, will be considered the underdog and if she can pull off a win over the more experienced Coenen, she will definitely make a splash onto the world MMA stage.

We send our best wishes out to Miesha Tate for a speedy recovery.

Picture of the Day:Franklin's Tattoo After Loss to Griffin.

Before their UFC 126 fight Rich Franklin and Forrest Griffin made a bet, that the loser would get a tattoo. Pre-fight the two jokingly talked about the bet and no one really knew if it was real or not. Griffin won the fight via unanimous decision, and this past weekend Franklin and his manager were spotted walking into a tattoo shop to make good on Rich's end of the bet. This picture has shown up on the internet of the tattoo and the jury is still out as to whether it is real or just henna. There are reports that it is henna, and it does look to be. Forrest Griffin has offered Rich Franklin his win bonus to have it removed. I say take that money Rich!

UFC 127: The UFC Returns Down Under

Join us fo live chat during UFC 127!
By Lacey Neher

This Saturday February, 26th B.J. Penn and John Fitch will take each other on to sse who will get a shot at the welterweight title. Former lightweight champ, B.J. Penn made the leap back up to welterweight after two straight losses to the current lightweight champ Frankie Edgar. He defeated Matt Hughes back in November by knocking him out in the first round winning two of their three fights against one another. The Hawaiian has been a main stay with the UFC for many years and he has a huge fan base. John Fitch is 14-1 in the UFC with that one loss coming to Georges St. Pierre back in 2008. The Indiana native has been considered one of the worlds top ten welterweights for sometime but, his fighting style has come under some scrutiny as being boring. If Fitch defeats Penn it will be his second shot at the welterweight title. Judging by Fitch's past fights he will want to take this fight down to the ground where his wrestling skills have serve him well. BJ Penn isn't called the Prodigy for no reason, he is just as deadly on the ground as he is standing. Fitch's best bet to defeat Penn, will be to dominate him on the ground.

In Middleweight action, Jorge Rivera takes on Michael Bisping in a fight that has turned into the trash talk fight on the card. Rivera has poked fun at "The Count" Bisping in interviews and video parodies. Being pretty good at throwing the verbal trash himself, Bisping claims he hasn't been swayed by Rivera's antics and he plans to defeat Jorge easily. You never know with Rivera, he has 12 wins by knock out and if you get in close you mau go to sleep. On the other hand, Bisping, a former TUF winner, has 12 wins by KO as well. This fight could go either way, but Rivera hasn't fought in almost a year so "ring rust" could be a factor.

Australian, George Sotiropoulos will fight Dennis Siver in Sotiropoulos home country, Certainly there will be an abundance of Aussie's cheering him on. Chris Lytle is trying to move up through the ranks in the welterweight division. He defeated Matt Serra back at UFC 119 and his next opponent, Brian Ebersole, a long time MMA veteran who is making his UFC debut. Ebersole, an American, has fought twelve of his last thirteen fights in Australia.

Many people are very critical of this card dismissing it as boring, you never know in MMA though! Some cards live up to the hype and some surpass the criticism.....we'll just have to see!Two fights will be streamed on the UFC's facebook page at 8pm est and three prelim fights will be shown on the Ion channel at 9pm est.

PPV Fights:
-Jon Fitch (23-3)vs. B.J. Penn (16-7-1)
-Michael Bisping (20-3) vs. Jorge Rivera (19-7)
-George Sotiropoulos (14-2) vs. Dennis Siver (17-7)
-Chris Lytle (30-17-5) vs. Brian Ebersole (46-14-1)
-Chris Camozzi (14-3) vs. Kyle Noke (18-4-1)

Preliminary Bouts:
-Ross Pearson (11-4) vs. Spencer Fisher (24-6)
-James Te Huna (12-4) and Alexander Gustafsson (10-1)
-Riki Fukuda (17-4) vs. Nick Ring (10-0)
-Mark Hunt (5-7) vs. Chris Tuchscherer (21-3)
-Maciej Jewtuszko (8-0) vs. Curt Warburton (6-2)
-Tom Blackledge (10-6) vs. Anthony Perosh (10-6)
-Tiequan Zhang (12-1) vs. Jason Reinhardt (20-1)

Strikeforce, Calvacante vs. Henderson Looks to be a Barn Burner

By Lacey Neher

Rafael "Feijao" Calvacante will defend his Strikeforce light heavyweight title belt on Saturday March 5th in Columbus Ohio. The Brazilian will face American and long time veteran of the sport, Dan Henderson. Henderson earned the title shot after knocking Renato Sobral out back in December. Calavacante won the belt on August 21st of 2010 when he TKO'd King Mo Lawal in the 3rd round to win his first championship belt.

This isn't Henderson's first rodeo when it comes to title shots, he has fought in six title fights in his almost fourteen year professional career, and he has won two title belts with the Pride Fighting Championships organization. Besides making a name for himself over in Japan, Henderson is most widely known for his years in the UFC. He was a coach on The Ultimate Fighter reality TV show where his KO of fellow coach Michael Bisping in their fight after the season of the show ended, will be remembered for a long time to come. He has fought both middlweight and light heavyweight, and the last time he fought for a belt was with the Strikeforce organization against the then, Middleweight Champ, Jake Shields. Shields dominated Henderson the whole fight and won by decision. The largest percentage of Dan's fights have been by decision but, when he gets a knockout it's always memorable and brutal. Hendo is the owner of "Team Quest Fitness Gym in California and The Clinch Gear apparel line.

Calvacante is a relative newbie compared to his opponent but, he has made a name for himself by being in a very small percentage of fighters that haven't had one fight go to decision in their career. He's suffered only two losses, one for throwing an illegal strike and one by getting TKO'd by Mike Kyle back in 2009. All his fights have been finishers, which is an attribute to Feijao's (which is the name he most widely known by) very aggressive style in the cage. When "King" Mo Lawal defeated Gegard Mousasi for the belt a lot of fight critics thought that he would hold that belt for a long time...Then came Feijao in and spoiled all those opinions. Rafael is a Black House fighter which speaks volumes considering that, that team has multiple champions in it's stable. UFC champ Anderson Silva is one of his storied training partners, and can be seen in Feijao's corner as well as Feijao in his. Calvacante was attending Veterinary school when he decided to quit and concentrate on fighting, after Rodrigo Nogueira convinced his father to let him do so. He has been training with the Nogueira's ever since.

Dan Henderson is also known for his fierce wrestling, and Rafael Calvacante has had a lot of experience fighting wrestlers. It will be a good fight and on paper it looks like Calvacante will keep his belt because of his youth and his training camp but, as always you can never count out Dan Henderson

MMA H.E.A.T's Karyn Bryant caught up with Calvacante at the UFC 126 Open workouts.

Bigfoot Silva's Manager Responds to Fedor's Coach's Conspiracy Theory

By Lacey Neher

Fedor Emelianenko lost his second straight fight in a row last Staurday night against Antonio
"Bigfoot" Silva, The Last Emperor's coach, Vladimir Voronov gave his conspiracy theory as to the real reason he believes Fedor lost the fight. Voronov told a Russian website, “We believe that forbidden psychological technology was used… It seems to us that not everything was right, and that certain technologies were used. Not ones that could be seen by the naked eye but psychological technologies that worked on both fighters at a distance.”“That is why during the fight Fedor was just not like himself. It seemed very strange behavior from Fedor. He stepped into the ring and did everything exactly the opposite of what we practiced before the fight. We were all shocked! Fedor had never previously done such a thing. Now nearly a week passes, everything settles, and we understand why all this happened.”

Antonio Silva's Manager Alex Davis jokingly responds to the accusations, "Jeez, I got caught. I will have to come out with the truth now. I hired a Macumbeiro (Brazilian witch doctor) and we killed a black chicken on the crossroads. After this, over a few beers, I showed the witch doctor Fedor’s fights, and he was worried that a chicken wouldn’t be enough, so we went out and killed a black goat just to make sure. Very potent stuff. Really messed Fedor’s brain waves up."

"We wanted to try that other military stuff Voronov is talking about, but it’s expensive technology and we were broke. The chicken and the goat came out way cheaper. Witch doctor is a friend; he did it for a few beers and an autograph."

The Jig is up!! I wonder if Silva will be stripped of his win now that the scathing truth has been revealed. Poor Fedor, seems his coach is making him look silly. Yes, I know Fedor's coaches statements were taken out of context, nothing wrong with a little humor now and then.

(no actual chickens, goats, or actual brain waves were hurt in the process!)

Picture of the Day. Beerbohm Prepares for his Strikeforce Fight in his "Fancy Pants"

Lyle Beerbohm earned his fighting name "Fancy Pants" from the shorts he wears when he fights. Shorts that his mother personally made for him. Beerbohm's life story is an inspirational one. He went from accomplished wrestler to meth addict serving prison time to undefeated mixed martial artist. It has been captured in a documentary entitled "No Submission, The Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm Story"  Beerbohm faces Pat Healy in the main event at Strikeforce Challengers in Texas tomorrow Friday the 18th of February.

Roxanne Modafferi is a Ninja........Shhhhhh....+New Ninja Interview!

By Lacey Neher

Roxanne Modafferi is trying something new for fight on February 26th, she will be fighting at 125 lbs for the first time in her MMA career (15-6). Modafferi will face Rosi Sexton (11-2) another celebrated veteran of MMA at Cage Warriors 40 in London on February 26th. Modafferi, an American who lives and works in Japan, usually can be seen fighting at 135lbs and she is a favorite among fans for her easy going and approachable nature. Roxanne has a multi-faceted fight style, with a mix of Judo, Kenpo Karate, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Ninjitsu in her arsenal.

In an interview with Brit MMA.Co.UK she was asked," if she could sum up in a few words what Sexton should expect come fight night, what would they be". Modafferi replied,“Rosi should expect Ninjaness,”

In an attempt to throw Roxanne off her ninja ways Rosi Sexton has thrown some mental warfare Modafferi's way. Since this is Roxanne's first time fighting at 125 (she usually fights at 135lbs) she had had to diet to make sure she makes weight. Sexton has been posting pictures of fattening and sugary foods to Roxanne's facebook page (jokingly of course). Nicely played Rosi! This is a testament to how most female fighters take their fighting very seriously, but that is where they leave it, in the cage.

Modafferi has made two Top-Secret videos recently showcasing some of her super-ninja techniques that she will look to employ in her fight against Sexton. But, please be careful to keep these to yourself...Roxy would like to keep Rosi Sexton from knowing....and this post will self destruct 30 seconds....not really. PLUS check out the new interview below!

Roxanne recently did an interview with REAL ninja's. Check this out...It may be one of the greatest interviews ever!!!

Ryan Couture Prepares for Second Pro Fight (with Video)

Ryan Couture fights Lee Higgins, in his second pro fight this Friday Feb. 18th on the Strikeforce Challengers card in Austin Texas. Couture was 5-1 as an amateur and he won his pro debut back in August with a triangle choke over Lucas Stark at Strikeforce Challengers in Phoenix, Arizona. He was scheduled to fight back in November, but he was suffering from a staph infection that postponed the fight.

Ryan Couture is trying to blaze a path different than that of his Father, Randy. (like you didn't already know that was his dad) The elder Couture, has fought both heavyweight and light heavyweight where as his son, Ryan is a lightweight. Ryan wrestled in high school in Washington state and attended Western Washington University where he earned a degree in mathamatics. He worked at a bank until he decided to try his hand at his father's profession .

Ryan trains at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas where he has Martin Kampmann, Gray Maynard, Forrest Griffin, and Evan Dunham (to name a few) as training partners.

Georges St. Pierre Says if He Goes Up to Middleweight He will Stay There.(video)

By Lacey Neher

The MMA world has been wanting to witness  Welterwight Champ Georges St. Pierre and Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva in a UFC "Super Fight" for some time now. The two fighters are in a dead lock for pound for pound best in a lot of fans opinions. They both have (for the most part) cleaned their respective weight divisions out and it's been hard to find worthy opponents that can test either one.

The possibilty of this "Super Fight" happening is getting greater everyday! Considering St. Pierre, who is favored to beat Jake Shields at UFC 129 in April does just that, Dana White has announced that the UFC will work towards the two champs taking each other on in the octagon sometime in the near future.

Georges St, Pierre has some very interesting things to say about going up to Middleweight. Some of GSP's statements lead to some very interesting questions. He says if he goes up to 185 he will stay there. So, is Georges going to vacate the Welterweight Title to participate in the "super fight"? Will the UFC have to pay him a pretty penny to do so?

2011 is going to be a drama filled year for the UFC...What's new...Right?

A blogger from The Baltimore Sun caught up with GSP at the Under Armour Lab. (that explains the get up)

Lyoto Machida Opens up about Couture, The Pressure of Win or be Cut, and the Shogun/Jones fight

By Lacey Neher

No doubt Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida is feeling the pressure to win his upcoming fight with "Captain America" himself, Randy Couture at UFC 129  in Toronto Canada in April. The UFC issued an ultimatum after his second loss in a row with the organization, "Win your next fight or you will be cut." This is shocking to some considering Machida is a former champ and his recent loss to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was controversial. UFC boss, Dana White stated at the post UFC 123 press conferance that Rampage and Machida would have no re-match because Rampage clearly won the fight. Obviously, Dana was watching the fight with "who will make him more money in the future" frame of mind, because that fight wasn't as close as the Machida/Shogun fight and it got a re-match. If Machida wants to impress his boss he must win decisevly whether that be by submission, KO, or otherwise.

Machida spoke with Guillherme Cruz for Tatame about Traing for UFC 129, The pressure he is feeling to win or be cut, and who he thinks will win the Jones/Shogun match up.

On how is preparation for UFC 129 is going:

We’re working a lot on my conditioning, because we know Couture is much resistant. And we’ve already started the technical trainings, but we still are doing the basics.

On his expecataions for the fight with Couture:

The expectations are the best. We know Randy Couture is a great champion, a guy who helped to build the sport as it is, and it’s a great pleasure to have this fight on my résumé, because I’ll be part of Randy Couture’s history on the sport. He added much to MMA. I believe we can win, we have many weapons. Despite he’s on a certain age, he’s tough and experienced, and he’s been fighting guys like Minotauro, and he did tough fights and he’s tough for anyone.

On Couture's fighting style:

This is his strong point, but he has evolved a lot along with the sport. As he always competed in high level, he doesn’t do only thing and one thing only. The clinch game may be his strongest weapon, but we’ve noticed many areas he’s good at. He dodges well, he has good takedowns…

On where he is training:

Well, for the United States I don’t intend to go now, but maybe I’ll go to Rio and spend a season there. While I don’t decide if I’ll go, I’ll stay here. Probably I’ll bring some people to train with me here.

On the mounting pressure from his employers, The UFC, to win or be cut:

Of course. UFC considers the incomes a lot, the profits, and if I’m not pleasing the fans anymore, they won’t feel sorry for me. That’s why I’ve always invested on me a lot, and it won’t be any different now. If I did a lot, I’ll do a lot more now. I’ll give my best trying to win. If I have to bring the best professionals, I will. I’ll be far, geographically, but I can bring the guys to help me here in Belem.

On fighting in front of 50,000 people in Toronto:

I’ve had the experience of fighting in front of over 50 thousand people, on Tokyo Dome, but UFC’s fans are different. They scream, they boo, it’s a different thing. I have great expectations to know how it’ll be like, but I believe I can control this well. I can’t get trapped by this. I can focus.

On who he thinks the Canadian audience will root for him or Randy Couture:

I don’t think it’s too hard to happen, because Randy is well liked anywhere, he has a great name and went far on the sport. But there’s this American-Canadian rivalry, and I’m counting on it (laughs).

On Who he thinks will win the Shogun/Jones LHW title fight:

When you enter the cage, specially against a guy like Jones, of course he can win, but I believe Shogun is more prepared and plays harder. Technically, he’s more complete than Jon Jones. He has a good ground game, he’s a good striker, he knows everything. Everybody’s looking at Jon Jones’ side, who’s a young guy, but I don’t agree. He just seems to have an advantage because of his conditioning. Shogun is also young and has conditions to do a great fight. Shogun is more likely to win then Jon Jones.

Where will Machida go of he loses to Randy Couture?  Scott Coker, the President of Strikeforce has stated that they won't be signing the UFC's cast offs anymore in the future. Does Machida seem like the kind of fighter that will just go back home to Belem Brazil and fall back on his Physical Education degree or will he continue fighting in smaller shows? It will interesting to see the events of UFC 129 unfold.

Beerbohm and Healy Head Up Strikeforce Challengers 14 Card

By Lacey Neher

Lyle "Fancy Pants" Beerbohm and Pat "Boom Boom" Healy will headline Friday's Challengers Event in Austin texas. Healy is hoping to spoil Beerbohm's perfect record of 15-0. The two lightweights will be out to prove that they belong in the big show and in the run for a title shot sometime in the future.

As some may remember Beerbohm was voted "Most Underrated Fighter" in the Real Women and Men's 2010 MMA awards last December. He spent some time in prison on drug charges and while incacerated was inspired to some day be a mixed martial artist after watching The Ultimate Fighter. On his way home after being released from jail, he made a pit stop at a local gym and he's been fighting ever since. Lyle is hoping to get that title shot very soon and make 2011 his year.

Pat Healy is a very experienced veteran of the sport with a record of 25-17. He's won 3 of his last four fights with his last loss coming from Josh Thomson back in June of 10'.

Ryan Couture(1-0) will be fighting in his second professional fight as a lightweight against Lee Higgins(2-0). Couture was scheduled to fight in a challengers event back in November of 2010, but had to withdraw due to a staph infection.

Carlo Prater (25-10) and Bryan Travers(14-2) will be meeting in a lightweight bout. Prater is a Texas based fighter who has a notable wins over UFC fighters Carlos Condit and Melvin Guillard on his record. Travers is making his Strikeforce debut and is known for his speed and wrestling.

Welterweights, Erik Apple (10-2) and Ryan Larson(5-2) will take to the cage against eachother. Apple hasn't fought since 2009 at Strikeforce Challengers 5. His opponent, Larson is a Texas based fighter and this is his first fight in a big named organization.

The event airs live on Showtime.

Here is the complete fight card:
MAIN CARD
Lyle Beerbohm vs. Pat Healy
Carlo Prater vs. Bryan Travers
Ryan Couture vs. Lee Higgins

Gina Carano Set to Comeback....Hopefully (video included)

By Lacey Neher

A very nervous, (It seemed to me. Watch the vid, you be the judge) Gina Carano announced last night during the Strikeforce event that she will indeed be making a comeback to fighting in the cage sometime this year. This makes many fans very happy. I want to be happy I really do...but maybe I am a little miffed at one of women's MMA's most recognized fighters. I felt for over a year and a half she had left us, her fans hanging. We know she's been making a movie but, what has taken her so long to make a comeback finally? In this writer's opinion I think she wasn't sure if she wanted to come back.

She was an unbeaten successful female fighter in the summer of 2009 when Strikeforce tapped her and current women's middleweight champ, Cris "Cyborg" Santos to meet each other in a super fight. As we all remember, Cyborg dominated or should I say destoyed Carano that night by TKOing her at the last second of the first round. Since we've seen nothing...heard nothing..It was like our best friend had abandoned us for Hollywood and now that she is coming back to her roots, we are supposed to be super excited and welcome her with open arms. Well, maybe we should be, and I will be in time as well.

As said in an prior article that I wrote, ( Gina Carano is No Longer the Face of Women's MMA) I would believe Carano was coming back when I heard it from her lips and she stepped into the cage. Well, The first one is checked off the list. Now, I am waiting for her to take that step. Another part of me wonders if she will only come back for one fight that will coincide with the "Haywire" movie release. It's actually a brilliant marketing ploy. I hope it's not a one time thing ..or until she has another movie to promote.

Who should Carano meet on her return? Many names have been thrown out there..Amanda Nunes, Cyborg..Again, Cindy Dandois, to name a few.  Who ever she meets it will be exciting to see "Conviction" put on her 4 ounce gloves and go toe to toe once again. One has to wonder if that dirty word, "ring rust" will be a factor or not.

I'm not aiming to be bitter and cynical, I just don't want to get my hopes up and be disappointed. Once Carano is standing in the cage with her mouth guard in and her fight gear on, I'm sure I will forgive my old "friend" (so to speak), and I am 100% certain I will be sitting on the edge of my seat in front of my TV like all fans will be.

Thanks to Gina-Carano's official you tube page for sharing this video from 2/12/2011 with us!

Picture of the Day. An Embrace

After his tough loss to Antonio Bigfoot Silva last evening, Fedor Emeliananko shared that he is ready to pack it in and possibly leave the sport of MMA. After the event as the Russian was leaving The Izod Center in Newark, New Jersey he was approached by fellow Heavyweight Josh Barnett, who kissed him on the cheek, whispered something in his ear and kissed him on the cheek. ..touching

The two never fought each other

After Loss to Silva, Fedor Alludes to Leaving MMA.

By Lacey Neher

Sad day for the hardcore Fedor Emelianenko fans. After Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva defeated him by TKOing (dr. stoppage) him in their first round, Strikeforce Grand Prix tournament fight, he announced that it was time for him to (possibly) leave. What does that mean exactly?

*He will really retire and live a quiet life in Russia.
*He will consider retiring for a little while and then, change his mind.
*He will keep his hand in the MMA community in some capacity.
*He will become a political figure in Russia.

Any of these are possible. You never know where a huge life decision will take an elite athlete. Fedor Emelianenko has been a MMA pro since May of 2000. His  roots are in Russian Sambo, Judo and Boxing. Fedor has a long list of accomplishments outside of Mixed Martial Arts. His main fighting style is Sambo, in which he was Russian champ many times over.Whether or not he will continue competing in Sambo competitons in which he has competed in as recently as 2010, hasn't been mentioned.

The way the "possible" retirement was so smoothly announced leads one to believe that he had already decided to consider ending his MMA career if he lost in the tournament. This is Emelianenko's second loss in a row with his last loss coming from Fabricio Werdum in 2010. Werdum submitted Fedor giving him his only clear cut loss in his career. Fedor came out in his fight with Silva looking like a man on a mission to get a knock out..a little desperate maybe. This may have been his downfall. Silva certainly capitalized on the size advantage but, we saw Fedor make quick work of the uber-huge Hong Man-Choi back on 2007 defeating the Japanese fighter by armbar in the first round. Fedor has always been one of those fighters you can never count out no matter how bad he is getting beat. That Fedor didn't show up to the fight with Silva. He seemed different somehow. As always it is hard to read Emelianenko because he has that ever present poker face permantly affixed.

If Fedor does officially pack in his MMA career it would be completely understandable. He obviously doesn't want to be one of those fighters that just doesn't know when to pack it in. It's going to be hard to imagine MMA without Fedor Emelianenko, and there is a huge following of loyal Fedor fans that are mourning the end of "The Last Emperor's" career. To them I give my sincerest heartfelt sympathy. (really)

Tonight we all witnessed MMA history. The Great Fedor was dominated and fell in the first round of a tourney he was picked to win or (at least) make it to the final round, and subsequently decided to announce that it is "Possibly time to leave MMA." How this affects the future of the sport and it's fans remains to be seen, but make no mistake, Fedor Emelianenko was/is an entity in the great sport of Mixed Martial Arts who's accomplishments will never be forgotten. Long Live MMA!

Strikeforce HW Grand Prix, Who's Fought Who "Fight Tree"

By Lacey Neher

The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix resumes once again this when Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum meet once again, and in their last fight back in 2006 Werdum won by submission. Will 5 years make a difference for Overeem? The two Americans, Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers meet for the first time.
I put together this "Fight Tree" so to speak, of who has fought who in the past, who won, who lost and who got knocked out back before the first leg of the tourney and now that grand prix action is starting back up I decided to update it and revive it.

Fedor Emelianenko has fought:
Fabricio Werdum (June, 2010. Werdum wins by Submission)
Andrei Arlovski (January, 2009, Fedor wins by KO)
Brett Rogers (November, 2009. Fedor wins by TKO)
Antonio Silva (February, 2011, Silva wins by TKO)

Antonio Silva has fought:
Andrei Arlovski (May,2010 Silva wins by UD)
Fabricio Werdum (November,2009. Werdum wins by UD)
Fedor Emilianenko (February, 2011, Silva wins by TKO)

Fabricio Werdum has fought:
Fedor Emelianenko (June,2010. Werdum wins by submission)
Antonio Silva (November, 2009. Werdum wins by UD)
Andrei Arlovski (April,2007. Werdum wins by UD)
Alistair Overeem (May,2006 Werdum wins by submission)
Sergei Kharitonov (October,2005. Kharitinov wins by Split Dec.)

Alistair Overeem has fought:
Brett Rogers (May,2010. Overeem wins by TKO)
Sergei Kharitonov (September,2007 Kharitonov wins by KO)
Fabricio Werdum(May,2006. Werdum wins by submission)
Sergei Kharitonov(February,2006. Kharitonov wins by TKO)

Sergei Kharitonov has fought:
Alistair Overeem (September, 2007. Kharitonov wins by KO)
Alistair Overeem (February,2006. Kharitonov wins by TKO)
Fabricio Werdum (October,2005 Kharotonov wins by split decision)
Andrei Arlovski (February, 2011, Kharitonov wins by KO)

Andrei Arlovski has fought:
Antonio Silva (May,2010. Silva wins by UD)
Brett Rogers (June,2009. Rogers wins by TKO)
Fedor Emelianenko (January 2009, Fedor wins by KO)
Fabricio Werdum (May 2006,Werdum wins by UD)
Sergei Karitonov(February, 2011, Kharitonov wins by KO)

Brett Rogers has fought:
Alistair Overeem (May,2010. Overeem sims by TKO)
Fedor Emelianenko (November,2009. Fedor wins by TKO)
Andrei Arlovski (June 2009. Rogers wins by TKO)

Josh Barnett has fought:
None of the other heavyweights in the tourney.

So there you have it who has fought who, who has beaten who, who has lost to who and who hasn't had a lick of experience with the other fighters. (I'm sure the word "whom" should be in there somewhere) You could sit and run the numbers for days as to which way the odds are leaning but, that would just leave you with a headache! Werdum has fought the most, Kharitonov has won all his bouts against other competitors and did I mention Barnett hasn't fought any of the other fighters?? Just sit back and relish in the amazing thing that is the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament!

Fedor vs. Silva Fight Card Kicks Off HW Grand Prix.

By Lacey Neher

I have been asked for my predictions of fights many times. To tell the truth I'm not very good at it. I am also maybe just a little superstitious, as in If I pick someone to win...they won't. So in answer to all those who say, "What are your predicitions for the fight?" I simply have this to say in the words of Clubber Lang, Prediction?.......PAIN!

This Saturday, Andrei Arlovski, Sergei Kharitonov, Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio
Silva step into the cage to kick off the first two quarterfinal fights of the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament. The main card will be aired on Showtime  and it is a heavyweight extravaganza. All five fights are heavyweight battles with Arlovski vs. Kharitonov and Fedor vs. Silva being the co main events.

Fedor "The Last Emporer" Emelianenko (32-2) is coming off his first loss in ten years (which was a stoppage because of a cut), after Fabricio Werdum submitted him back in june of 2010. He has more experience fighting professionally than some fighters will ever see and he is easily considered one of the best. Fedor's roots in MMA are in Combat Sambo, Boxing and Judo. The Russian born Emelianenko, was the last heavyweight champion the now defunct Pride Fighting Championships ever saw.

Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (15-2) last loss like his opponent was to his fellow Brazilian Fabricio Werdum. He is coming off of a win though, coming into this fight after defeating Mike Kyle by TKO back in December of 2010. "Bigfoot" has also defeated fellow Grand Prix fighter Andrei Arlovski.Ten of Silva's wins have come by way of (T)KO and his roots in MMA are in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Karate.

Many people have Fedor picked to win this bout. But, you  really can't count out Silva because as we all know, everyone has a punchers chance in MMA. The winner of Fedor-Silva will take on the winner of Overeem vs. Werdum.

Andrei Arlovski and Sergei Kharitonov will take each other on in their quarterfinal fight Saturday night. It has been said that both fighters have similiar fighting styles. Arlovski is coming off of a 3 fight losing streak and Kharitonov is coming off of a win with the Dynamite organization. As a matter of fact, this is Kharitonov's Strikeforce Debut. If Arlovski can't come out of his losing slump he may pack his MMA career in. Most people are predicting a win for Sergei Kharitonov. The winner of Arlovski vs. Kharitonov takes on the winner of Barnett vs. Rodgers.

The other bouts on the card:

Televised on Showtime: (All  Heavyweight)
Shane Del Rosario vs. Lavar Johnson
Chad Griggs Vs.Gianpiero Villante
Valentijn Overeem vs. Ray Sefo

Televised on HDnet
John Cholish vs.Marc Stevens (LW)
Igor Gracie vs. John Salgado (WW)
Sam Oropeza vs. Jaun Carlo-Clauss (WW)
Anthony Leone vs. Josh LaBerge (FW)
Kevin Roddy vs. Jason McClean (FW)

The Weigh-ins for this event take place on MMA Live on HDnet at 5pm est.
